What is Harmless Atelier?
Harmless Atelier is the plastic-free accessories range from Project Harmless — handmade in Scotland from deadstock fabric, designed without synthetic components, zips, or plastic trimmings. A small-batch alternative to mass-produced textile accessories, with every piece made from fabric that would otherwise be discarded. From the UK brand named one of the UK's 100 most inspiring small businesses 2025.
What are the best plastic-free accessories made in Scotland?
Looking for plastic-free accessories made in Scotland? Key things to check: truly plastic-free (no synthetic threads, zips, buttons, or linings), deadstock fabric sourcing (reducing textile waste), and made locally (not "designed in Scotland" with production elsewhere). Harmless Atelier meets all three — handmade in Scotland from deadstock fabric, with natural closures only.
What is deadstock fabric?
Deadstock fabric is unsold, over-ordered, or end-of-run textile that would otherwise be sent to landfill or incineration by mills and fashion houses. It's high-quality material — often the same used by major brands — that never reached production. Using deadstock keeps textile waste out of landfill and eliminates the resource cost of producing new fabric.
Why do you use deadstock instead of new fabric?
The fashion industry produces more fabric each year than it uses — and the surplus is largely landfilled or incinerated. Using deadstock means Harmless Atelier doesn't commission new textile production, dramatically reducing our footprint. It also means every piece is small-batch — limited by the deadstock we source, and often one-of-a-kind in that colourway.
Are Harmless Atelier accessories really plastic-free?
Yes — Harmless Atelier accessories are plastic-free in every single component we control: natural-fibre threads, natural buttons, and rope or tie closures rather than zips. All fabrics used are plastic-free.
Where are Harmless Atelier pieces made?
Harmless Atelier pieces are handmade in the Scottish Borders, Scotland. Every piece is cut and stitched locally, by hand or on small-scale equipment. No overseas manufacturing, no large-scale factory production.
How do I care for my Harmless Atelier piece?
Each Harmless Atelier piece ships with specific care instructions, because deadstock fabric varies. Generally: spot-clean where possible, cold hand-wash for washable fabrics, avoid tumble drying, store folded or flat. Always check the care label on your specific piece before laundering.
Do you offer repairs on Harmless Atelier accessories?
Yes — we believe well-made accessories should last, and we offer repairs on Harmless Atelier pieces for lifetime. Send us a photo of the damage via our contact page and we'll advise. Minor repairs are often free or nominal fee.
Is each Harmless Atelier piece one-of-a-kind?
Each Harmless Atelier piece is effectively one-of-a-kind or part of a very small batch. It's often made-to-order or made-to-measure. Because we work exclusively with deadstock fabric, once a given fabric runs out, it's gone. Similar pieces may appear in different colourways later, but the exact fabric you buy is limited — giving each piece real rarity.
What are Harmless Atelier's sustainability credentials?
Harmless Atelier operates on three pillars: deadstock-only fabric sourcing (no new textile production commissioned), Scotland-made (minimal shipping footprint), and plastic-free components. Project Harmless was named one of the UK's 100 most inspiring small businesses 2025 and is a finalist at the Made in Scotland awards 2023 and 2025.
Are there any plastic components in Harmless Atelier pieces?
Harmless Atelier pieces are designed without plastic components unless requested by the customer. We do not use plastic zips — we use ties, toggles, and natural buttons instead. Threads are natural fibre. Any metal components are limited to small fixings where structurally required. Everything else is fabric and natural fibre.
What's the returns policy on handmade Harmless Atelier items?
Unused, unworn Harmless Atelier pieces can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a full refund, subject to condition. Made-to-order or custom pieces are non-returnable unless faulty. For faulty or damaged items, contact us within 14 days of delivery with a photo of the issue.
How do you source the deadstock fabric?
Our deadstock fabric comes from Scottish mills, UK designers, and European designers . We work directly with mills and fashion houses to source surplus, over-orders, and end-of-run textiles — saving them from landfill or incineration. Quantities are always limited, which is why each Harmless Atelier piece is part of a small batch.
How long does Harmless Atelier production take?
Harmless Atelier pieces are handmade to order. In-stock items ship within 4 working days. Made-to-order pieces take 1–5 weeks to produce, depending on design complexity and fabric availability. You'll receive an estimated ship date at checkout, and we'll update you if anything changes.
Do you do custom or made-to-order Harmless Atelier pieces?
Yes — we accept custom or made-to-order Harmless Atelier pieces.Get in touch via our contact page and we'll advise on fabric availability, lead time, and pricing. Deadstock constraints apply.
